HOW TO NAVIGATE THE PROCESS

progress is personal

How do I know if there is progress?

Great question! Progress in therapy looks different to each individual. Some individuals may recognize progress through improved mood and increased clarity in thoughts and actions, others may recognize progress through reduced levels of stress and increased self-confidence, whereas others may see progress in improved communication skills or healthier relationships. As such – progress markers vary significantly and look different from one individual to the next. To support recognition of progress, individual goals are established in the initial intake to clarify needs and support healthy, realistic goals for services.

Question.

Can I cancel if I don't like the treatment?

Participation in therapy or life coaching is always voluntary and you have the right to end services at any time you feel necessary. Regardless of the reason, it is encouraged you speak with your counselor directly to address any concerns you may have about therapy focus or progress or to address any changes in desired goals for services. When ending services, it is also encouraged take adequate time to collaboratively reflect on therapeutic gains, provide one another feedback, and address any positive or challenging emotions that may come with the ending of the therapeutic relationship. When ending services, follow-up sessions and/or outside referrals will be provided if needed.

In addition, it is also the right of the counselor to chose to terminate services if needed for reasons including, but not limited to: client’s lack of participation in therapy, conflicts of interests, lack of compensation for services, or the need for a more specialized service provider given individual needs. In relevant cases, the counselor will provide an appropriate referral.

The process

How long does therapy last?

Individual sessions typically last 45-60 minutes depending on topics and goals with the exception of the Initial Intake Session, which typically lasts 90 minutes.

The number of cumulative sessions per client varies greatly depending on individual goals and needs. Some individuals are able to achieve specific, time-oriented goals in as little as 6-8 sessions whereas other individuals benefit from a deeper more complex focus, which can last anywhere from 3-12+ months.

Therapy can be as long or as short as desired and is always collaboratively discussed to ensure frequency and duration support ability to achieve realistic goals and obtain the most benefit from services.

what's the difference?

what's the difference between mental heath counseling/therapy and life coaching?

Mental Health Counseling & Life Coaching can both offer individuals the support, insight, and tools of a skilled professional as they pursue personal growth and future goals. However, people begin growth from different points. To decide whether Mental Health Counseling or Life Coaching would be most beneficial to you, here are a few key factors to consider:

Mental Health Counseling addresses issues that are distressing or impairing functioning in some way, including: limiting self-doubt or beliefs, anxiety, depression, trauma, unfinished childhood issues, overwhelming feelings, painful relationships, addiction and more. The focus is on healing as well as growing from that healing. The healing and growth achieved with therapy is often introspective, subtle and may be evident more on the inside than on the outside.

Life Coaching primarily benefits individuals simply interested in changing their circumstances and improving outcomes; for those who are not looking for as much insight or healing, whose aim is to get clarity, plan, take action, and maintain gains already achieved. It may address specific personal projects, business successes, or life transitions by examining what is going on right now, discovering what obstacles there might be, designing a new life, and identifying steps on how to make future dreams a reality.

Both Mental Health Counseling and Life Coaching can help you gain clarity, enable you to harness strengths you’ve gained from the past, visualize your goals and identify steps to help you get there. Both can support and encourage you along your journey towards self-growth and success!

You don't have to do it by yourself.

How can mental health counseling help?

Mental Health Counseling is a personal, yet collaborative process where many benefits can be gained such as improved relationships, gaining life direction, improved confidence and self-esteem, and reduced feelings of stress, anxiety or other negative emotions. Depending on the nature of your goals, mental health counseling can help provide the support and tools you need to work towards desired life change. However, these benefits largely depend upon your commitment and willingness to participate in the process honestly, attend all scheduled sessions (or reschedule when needed), set goals, share your thoughts, emotions, and opinions openly (whether positive or negative), complete any assigned homework exercises, and try new behaviors or skills learned in sessions.
